What to Plant
Annuals: Summertime means we now will be carrying many gallon size annuals which will give your garden instant color impact! We have Dahlias, Snapdragons, Impatiens and sunflowers just to name a few! Million Bells (Calibrachoa) are great for hanging baskets and they don’t need to be deadheaded! Planting annuals is a great way to experiment with new color combinations without the expense or commitment of planting perennials and shrubs.
Perennials: Need some summer color in your perennial border? We have a great selection of Hostas, Crocosmia, Coneflowers and many great summer blooming perennials
Herbs: We have fantastic selection! Try something new in your herb garden this year such as cilantro, basil or oregano. Plant rosemary to spice up your BBQ and provide year round color and fragrance!
Hebes: Quickly becoming a Northwest favorite! Try “Mckean”, “Red Edge” or many other great new varieties. Fabulous foliage on a compact evergreen shrub, Hebes are great in your mixed border or as a component of your container planting.

Landscape maintenance
Summer is here at last! But don’t forget to keep your garden properly watered! Check out our great selection of hoses, sprinklers and other irrigation products, 25% off through July 31st only! Use Zeba Quench in your containers to help them retain water and lower your watering needs. Check out our soaker hoses to ensure that you are efficiently watering your garden beds.
Perennials: Deadhead your spring blooming perennials. Cut Shasta Daisies to the ground after they are finished blooming to get them to bloom again in the fall. Stop watering Bearded Iris early in the month. At the end of the month trim back leaves, dig, divide and then replant. Feed Asters and Chrysanthemum with a dose of high phosphorus fertilizer periodically until buds begin to show color. Shear flowering ground covers to revive them, then fertilize and water. Early in the month, pinch Dahlias to increase side shoots; this will make the plant produce more flowers.
Annuals: Continue to deadhead your annuals to keep them blooming!
Trees & Shrubs: Early this month is your last chance to prune Rhododendrons and Azaleas. Mulch them to conserve water, prevent weeds and enrich soil.
Roses: Feed, mulch, water and remove faded blooms to keep them blooming. Also, pick up any fallen leaves and throw them away. Don’t compost them!
Fruits and Vegetables: Harvest raspberries! After they are finished bearing fruit, remove the old canes. Leave the green, new canes for next year. On ever-bearing canes, remove upper half of each cane that bore fruit. The lower half will bear fruit next summer. Fertilize strawberries after harvest. Feed June bearing plants with a balanced food such as a 10-10-10 fruit mix from Dr. Earth. Feed ever bearing plants with a lesser strength fertilizer, for example, 5-5-5 early in the month. Hoe lightly between your rows of vegetables to keep the weeds at bay. Later in the month start planting late-season vegetables such as Beets, Beans, Carrots, Chinese cabbage, Lettuce, Peas, Radish and Swiss chard for your fall harvest.
Pests in the landscape
Bugs: Continue to hunt for and destroy slugs in the shady areas of your garden. Try Sluggo, it is 100% safe and natural! 2.5lb. & 5lb. sizes are available. Or try one of our “slug pubs”, handmade by local artist Elaine Moore. Fill with beer and watch the slugs disappear (instead of your plants)! Treat spider mites and aphids with a spray of water (check the underside of leaves too) or use Safer Soap.
